As H-Hour approached for the beatdown to begin and honor the brave men that took the beach in Normandy 78 years prior, more and more men rolled in. Went thru the 5 core principles and shared some information about Operation Overlord.
The decision to launch the invasion in May 1943. There were 5 beachheads – Utah (US), Omaha (US), Juno (Canada), Sword (UK), Gold (UK). 5K vessels and 160K troops crossed the English Channel. 132,500 men landed on the beaches on D-Day.
By H-Hour (0630) on Omaha Beach everything had already gone to hell. Of the 64 amphibious tanks that were supposed to land five minutes after the invasion, 27 were at the bottom of the ocean due to sea conditions, 450 B-24 bombers missed their target due to overcast – 13000 bombs went long and missed their targets 8 rocket ships fired 1080 rockets each and they all fell short of the beach.
Paratroopers from 82nd Airborne, 101st Airborne, and British 6th Airborne parachuted in behind enemy lines to help support the naval invasion.
Basic Training
The PAX counted off into 5 groups:
Alpha Company
Bravo Company
Charlie Company
Delta Company
Echo Company
It took a little bit, but eventually PAX lined up in formation, with each company in a line facing the Q. YHC led the PAX in a quick warm-up of:
15 SSH
10 Windmills
5 Burpees
Next the PAX crossed the lawn in front of Moon Tower practicing a Tactical Advance, which would come in handy later.
Once we took the position across the lawn, the PAX moseyed to the University Mall. Once all the PAX arrived, YHC explained the beatdown.
Each company was to go to starting point on the outside of the mall, A by U Hall, B by Student Union, C at center, D next, then E. Each point represented one of the 5 beaches of Omaha.
Each company did 15 reps of the first exercise, Bear Crawled toward the beach (in the center), did 15 more reps of the same exercise, and Bear Crawled back. They then did 15 reps of the next exercise and continued with Bear Crawls, and repeated until all 4 exercises were completed. The exercises were:
Burpees
Big Boy Situps
Rocket Jumps
Walking Lunges (1-is-1)
After each round, A and E company did a tactical advance to make their way to companies B and D and then to company C. Companies waiting for the other companies planked up. Once all companies had joined up, we ran to the beachhead (the center).
Once in the center, the PAX circled up to do a group exercise – plank dominoes – first with the right hand down, then high plank, then left hand down, and finally low plank.
Each company moved to a new beach, rotating clockwise. Once each company arrived at their new beach, the PAX ran thru the exercises again. YHC called an audible to cut everything in half, including the Bear Crawl. After the big Boy Situps, we were getting short on time, and YHC called for the PAX to mosey to the front.
Finished with COT – COR, NOR, Cobra Commander was the 6, Named our FNG ‘Shake ‘n Bake’, Announcements – Summer Challenge, Aurora House, and a prayer. Always an honor to lead the PAX of F3.
